    Welcome to

Saint Alexis Orthodox Church

Saint Nicholas school

Every two weeks, the children in the parish are invited to attend the Saint Nicholas school here at Saint Alexis Orthodox Church. We feel that teaching children should focus on these main points:

  1. Exposure to the Holy Scriptures, as they are the most important part of the faith handed down once for all to the saints.
  2. Learning about the linguistic roots of our faith. We often do word studies on the meanings of a term in original, ancient languages such as Greek, Hebrew and Latin. Examples of Word studies we have done in the past:
    • βαπτίζω (baptizo) - submerge; Anglicized: baptize
    • Offices of the Church
      • επίσκοπος (episkopos) - overseer; Anglicized: Bishop
      • πρεσβύτερος (presbuteros) - elder; Anglicized: Priest
      • ιάκονος (diakonos) - servant; Anglicized: Deacon
    • Χριστός (Christos) / משׁיה (Mashiach) - anointed; Anglicized: Christ / Messiah
    • Sacrament
      • Sacramentum - Roman military sacred vow; Anglicized: Sacrament
      • μυστήριον (mysterion) - mystery; Anglicized: Mystery
  3. Understanding why we do what we do. It is vital for children (and adults) to have an understanding of why we have the practices that we do in the Orthodox Church; this makes practicing our faith meaningful and helps us to persevere.

Each time we meet, we begin the session with a short (10-15 minute) worship time of singing hymns and praying. This is followed by the activities planned for that day; these have included:

  • short, interactive questions and answer sessions
  • listen to music
  • scripture readings
  • puzzles and games
  • video presentations
  • viewing of icons
  • "field trips" where we go and explore part of the church, go outside or some other active participation where we learn through physical activity

Beginning in January 2006, we began with a series of classes on the Holy Mysteries of the Orthodox Church.

Saint Nicholas, the Wonderworker
of Myra in Lycia

Saint Nicholas was chosen as the Patron Saint of our school because of his love and dedication to the children he shepherded. As a kind and benevolent bishop, he cared for children wherever he went.
